ADVENTURE
Nicaragua offers you its scenic beauty everywhere, on the land, at the seaside, along its rivers and lakes, without a doubt, the most tranquil and relaxing that any visitor will ever find.

NATURE
Nicaragua has 24 volcanoes, great lakes, and many rivers and lagoons throughout its national territory, as a result Nicaragua is known as the "Land of Lakes and Volcanoes." Nicaragua has volcanic islands and refuges for art and nature, like the Solentiname Archipelago.

HISTORY AND CULTURE
Nicaragua not only represents the brave origin of its indigenous people with the meaning of its name, which is truly linked to its indigenous past in the Nahuatl language, Nic-atl-nahuac: "Here united with the water"; this country is also a symbol of the native resistance to the colonizers.

History

Nicaraguan History
Pre-Columbian Era
When we refer to the indigenous cultures that inhabited what today is Nicaragua, the general tendency is to restrict our vision to those groups encountered by the westerners on the pacific coast at their moment of contact in the XVI century. That is, the Chorotegas, Nicaraos, and Maribios; Matagalpas or Chontales in the central part of the country; and Miskitos, Sumos, and Ramas on the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua.

In 1960, scientific investigations in Nicaragua allowed us to go deeper into these processes through time, though there are still some unanswered issues due to lack of further investigations. At least in a very general way, we can outline some of our initial history.

Culture

Music and Dancing

The marimba is Nicaragua’s national instrument. It is made of timber films over bamboo or metal tubes of different lengths, played by using one, two, or four sticks -similar to drum sticks. Guitars and some percussion instruments usually accompany it. Nevertheless, the marimba predominates in the central and western departments of the country.

In the Atlantic coast (which could also be defined as the Caribbean Coast), the music has a strong afro-Caribbean influence and its rhythms are intense, sensual, and frenzied. The best occasion to see this aspect of our culture is during the Palo de Mayo (May Pole) festival in the city Bluefield.

There is also a strong theatrical heritage from our native ancestors. Enchanting music accompanies their plays, carrying you back to another era as you enjoy the show.

General Information

It is a tradition of the towns located on the plateau, from Masaya to Nandaime, to feed pilgrims and promisees during the festivities dedicated to the town’s patron saint. Most of the dishes derive from maize. Jinotepe, Diriamba, and San Marcos are famous for their festive dishes called “picadillo, ajiaco, and masa de cazuela or indio viejo”.

In Masaya, they go all out with corn pastries, foods, and drinks called rosquillas, chicha de maiz, corn with ginger, nacatamales, arroz aguado, pig’s head, pork with casaba and oxtail soup.
